Gifts for young F1 and MotoGP fans: sizes, LEGO by age and models

Gift for a young F1 and MotoGP fan: sizes, LEGO by age and models – illustrative image created with AI

Redakce Prixiro |

A young F1 or MotoGP fan will most likely be delighted with a kids' T-shirt, hoodie or cap featuring their favourite rider or driver, a LEGO set suited to their age, and a sturdy die-cast Bburago model they can actually play with. Choose clothing sizes by the child's height, LEGO by the age on the box, and save detailed Spark or Minichamps collector's models for later – they are not toys.

Below you will find an overview by age, kids' size charts and the manufacturer's age ratings for LEGO sets.

Overview: which gift for which age

Age Clothing and accessories LEGO Models
4–5 years T-shirt or hoodie (Puma 110–116), beanie DUPLO F1, City 60464 (4+) basic Bburago 1:43 for play
6–7 years T-shirt, hoodie, pyjamas with a team motif City F1 6+ (60442, 60443, 60474), 60444 7+ Bburago 1:43, multi-car sets
8–9 years kids' driver cap, team hoodie City 60445 truck (8+) Bburago 1:43, a first model for the shelf
10–12 years team T-shirt, cap with the driver's number Speed Champions (10+) Bburago 1:43 for play and for the shelf

LEGO age ratings are taken from the manufacturer; the other recommendations are a guide only. What matters most is who the child supports – and with kids that can change faster than with adults.

Kids' T-shirts and hoodies: size by height

Kids' teamwear is labelled by the child's height rather than by letters as with adults. Each manufacturer uses a slightly different system, so always check who makes the item.

Puma (Ferrari, McLaren and others)

Puma labels kids' sizes by height in centimetres. According to the Puma size guide, the sizes correspond to these ages:

Puma size 110 116 128 140 152 164
Age 4–5 yrs 5–6 yrs 7–8 yrs 9–10 yrs 11–12 yrs 13–14 yrs

Castore (Red Bull Racing)

Castore uses junior sizes with height ranges: JS 128–137 cm, JM 137–147 cm, JL 147–158 cm and JXL 158–170 cm (Castore size guide).

MotoGP and other brands

Some MotoGP kidswear (for example Ducati or Yamaha rider T-shirts) is labelled directly by age, such as 6–7 or 8–9 years. KTM Red Bull Racing kids' ranges use height in centimetres, much like Puma. Exact details are listed with each product.

Tip: measure the child and compare their height with the chart. If they are between two sizes, go for the larger one – the gift will last longer. For a risk-free choice, a looser-fitting hoodie is better than a close-fitting team shirt.

Browse the teams' kids' collections: Scuderia Ferrari, Red Bull Racing, Mercedes-AMG Petronas, Aston Martin, and for motorbike fans KTM and Ducati Corse.

Caps and beanies for kids

A cap is a popular gift because it makes a child look just like their driver in the paddock. An adult cap usually won't fit, though: according to New Era, adjustable adult 9FORTY caps are designed for a head circumference of 55.8–60.6 cm.

  • Puma lists its kids' team caps (for example Scuderia Ferrari) in a single youth size with an adjustable closure and a recommended age of 8–16 years (Puma).
  • New Era divides kids' caps into four tiers – Infant, Toddler, Child and Youth – and recommends choosing by age and head size (New Era).
  • How to measure: run a tape measure around the head about 2.5 cm above the eyebrows and over the widest part of the back of the head.

In winter, a kids' bobble beanie in team colours is more practical. For younger children who don't wear caps, a T-shirt or pyjamas is the safer choice.

LEGO by age: what the box says

The age on a LEGO box mainly indicates how demanding the build is – how many pieces and how complex the instructions a child can handle. You will find an overview of the ranges in our separate article on LEGO and motorsport; for a gift, the key thing is LEGO's own age rating:

Set Range Pieces Age according to LEGO
10445 F1 Team Race Cars & Drivers DUPLO 70 2+
60464 F1 Williams Racing & Haas F1 Race Cars City 92 4+
60442 F1 Driver with McLaren Race Car City 86 6+
60443 F1 Pit Stop & Pit Crew with Ferrari Car City 322 6+
60474 F1 Grid with VCARB & Sauber Race Cars City 313 6+
60444 F1 Garage & Mercedes-AMG & Alpine Cars City 678 7+

  • 4–7 years: LEGO City F1 sets – the cars are quick to build and ready to play with straight away.
  • 8–9 years: larger City sets with a garage or truck; a handy child can manage Speed Champions with a parent's help.
  • 10–12 years: Speed Champions of their favourite team. The cars share the same proportions, so a whole starting grid can be built up over time.
  • Technic F1 (18+) is not a children's set. For an older teenager it can be a joint project with a parent.

LEGO sets with F1 cars are in the Formula 1 collection.

Model cars: for play or for the display case?

With models, the most important thing for a child's gift is to tell a toy apart from a collector's model.

Bburago 1:43: metal that lasts

According to the manufacturer, basic Bburago F1 models in 1:43 scale are die-cast with plastic parts and are only unsuitable for children under 3 because of small parts (Bburago). They can handle normal play and cover current cars, so a child can have "their" driver. Browse the Bburago 1:43 models collection.

Watch out for versions with a base, a driver figure or helmet and a clear case: Bburago labels these as models for adult collectors, not suitable for children under 14 (Bburago). For an older fan they are nice pieces for a shelf, but not for the floor.

Spark and Minichamps: for collectors only

Detailed Spark and Minichamps models are collector's items. Minichamps explicitly states that its F1 models are not suitable for children under 14 (Minichamps). Resin models are also fragile – thin wings, antennas or mirrors break off easily if dropped. If you still want to give a child a collector's model, expect it to live in a display case and be handled by an adult.

The full range is in the Bburago F1 models collection; for motorbike fans there are MotoGP motorcycle models.

Don't forget

  • Who the child supports: ask the parents, including the driver's current team – drivers change teams often.
  • Height rather than age for clothing, the age on the box for LEGO.
  • Toy vs. collector's model: for young children choose a basic Bburago 1:43, not cased or resin models.
  • Combine: a kids' cap and a model car of the same driver make a popular gift set.

Frequently asked questions

Which kids' T-shirt size should I choose if I don't know the exact measurements?

Go by the child's height, not age. Puma labels kids' sizes by height in centimetres (e.g. 128 corresponds to 7–8 years, 140 to 9–10 years), Castore by height range (JS 128–137 cm, JM 137–147 cm). If the child is between two sizes or growing fast, choose the larger one.

From what age is Formula 1 LEGO suitable?

According to LEGO, the DUPLO F1 set (10445) is 2+, the smallest City set 60464 is 4+, other City F1 sets are 6+ to 8+, Speed Champions 10+ and the large 1:8 Technic models 18+. The age on the box mainly reflects how demanding the build is.

Can a child play with Spark or Minichamps models?

We don't recommend it. Minichamps states that its F1 models are not suitable for children under 14, and resin models are fragile. For play, choose the basic die-cast Bburago 1:43 models, which the manufacturer only marks as unsuitable for children under 3.

Is an adult cap suitable for a child?

Usually not. According to New Era, adjustable adult 9FORTY caps fit a head circumference of 55.8–60.6 cm, which is too big for younger children. Choose a kids' cap – for example, Puma lists its youth caps for ages 8–16 with an adjustable closure.
